一、阅读理解 A Mary Armstrong was a pretty little girl, but she was careless about some things.

Her way of leaving her books and toys just where she had used them last gave her mother much trouble in picking them up and putting them in their proper places. She had often told Mary the bad effects of being so careless. Her books and toys became broken. What was worse, the growing habit of carelessness would be harmful to her in her lifetime. It would make her unhappy, and make her friends sad.

One day, Mary and her mother went out into their pleasant yard to spend an hour in the open air. Mrs. Armstrong took her work with her. Mary played with Dash, her pet dog, and was having a happy time. But in the corner of the yard she found her nicest doll(玩具娃娃)all torn(撕破) and broken, and its dress covered with mud(泥). She knew that Dash had done this and she shouted at him angrily. Carrying the broken doll to her mum, she showed it to her and could hardly keep herself from crying. Mrs. Armstrong asked if she had left the doll on the sofa where Dash could easily get it. Mary had to answer, "Yes, Mum." "Then you must not blame(责怪) the dog, Mary, for he doesn"t know it is wrong for him to play with your doll. I hope this will be a lesson to you. Put your things away after playing." B Do you remember where you were when you heard about a traffic accident involving (牵涉)a close friend? The answer is probably yes. Do you remember what you were doing on your birthday that year? You may have to think a little harder. People remember bad memories more easily and in greater detail (细节)than good ones. Why is that? A new study found that people do this because of evolutionary (进化的)reasons. Elizabeth Kensinger and her partners at Boston College, US, did a study looking at this. They found negative feelings like fear and sadness cause an increase in brain activity. This activity happens in the part of the brain that controls memories. So memories caused by negative feelings are kept in greater detail than other kinds of memories. For example, after seeing a man on a street holding a knife, people remember the knife clearly, but they forget the details of the street.

According to Kensinger, it is easy to understand this from an evolutionary point of view. She believes that people pay attention to dangerous information so they can use that information to guide their actions and save their lives. They can also use it to plan for similar events in the future. The scientists say more studies are needed on how we remember bad memories. This line of research could help solve stress disorders (失调). 4.According to the passage, good memories are remembered

A.People pay more attention to dangerous information. B.People can learn nothing from bad memories. C.People can plan for all dangerous events in the future. D.People have the ability to save themselves from danger. 8.What would be a good title for the passage?

A.Brain activity controls memories B.How we remember bad memories C.Bad memories are easier to remember D.Bad memories can cause stress disorders 二、任务型阅读

All the wisdom (智慧) of the times and all the stories that have given humans pleasure for centuries, are easily and cheaply available to all of us in books, but we must know how to make use of this treasure. The unluckiest people in the world are those who have never discovered how enjoyable it is to read good books. I"m very interested in people and finding out about them. Some of the most amazing people I"ve met could only be found in a writer"s imagination, then in his book, and then, again, in my imagination. I"ve found new friends and new worlds in books. Reading is fun, not because the writer is telling you something, but because it makes your mind work. Your own imagination works along with the writer"s or even goes beyond(超出) his. Your experience, compared with his, brings you to the same or different conclusions, and your ideas develop as you understand his. We can often find something connected with ourselves in books. Every book stands by itself, like a one-family house, but books in a library are like houses in a city. Although they are separate, in some way they are connected with each other. Books influence each other. They connect the past, the present and the future and have their own age groups, like families. Wherever you start reading, you connect yourself with one of the families of ideas. And in the end, you not only find out about the world and the people in it, you find out yourself, too.

Reading can only be fun if you expect it to be. If you only read the books others ask you to read, you probably won"t have fun. But if you put down a book you don"t like and try another till

you find one that means something to you, and then relax with it, you will certainly have a good time!
